I got to lvl 16 before the first and only hackers I ever saw in EQ appeared on top of me and killed me. I also remember playing on the discord server when it opened, it was seriously difficult to lvl to 10+. I lost about half a level sending me well back into the hell lvl and I lost all my equipment. Sadly, I could never attack Brother, but c'est la vie.Īnd it's gonna get the "not an RPG" argument, but Borderlands (especially 2 and TPS), at least for replayability.Įverquest was also very harsh, I remember dying the level after a hell lvl maybe lvl 36 on a boat and my corpse flew off into the ocean. Going through again and nuking all of the annoying characters with my Samurai and Dark Knight was so money. The dress/job system was super fun to mess with, it uses an ATB battle system, so it's like the last of the "classic" Final Fantasies, and the New Game+ on that game was perfect: start from the beginning with what you have, less story items. a lot of places, but the meat of the game is the battle system. Forget the story, it wraps up X nicely if you want but is kind of silly in. Also, the gambit system is so dope, and was a precursor for a lot of future game elements. That, plus the general openness of the world, for a game designed at that time, was crazy. A hard damage scale means a resourceful player can gather gear that allows them to complete the game at level 1. Either the original, or the recent Zodiac version. >!insert spoiler here!< Other subreddits you might like: someįinal Fantasy XII is my vote.
